The Authentic Dolly Parton: A Conversation between Michael Enright and music critic Robert Harris on CBCs Sunday Edition Parton FEATURE SUnday Edition Oct 19 2014

On the Sunday Edition. CBC, October 19, 2014, Michael Enright in conversation with music critic Robert Harris on the phenomenon of Dolly Parton, as a songwriter, singer, actor, businesswoman, AND feminist.   One of the delights of this conversation was hearing in Michael Enright’s voice, his whole new appreciation and image of Dolly Parton. Robert Harris’s selection of musical pieces to illustrate the brilliance and feminist instincts of Dolly’s “Backwoods Barby” tunes, are spot on.   Harris was convincing in his illustrations of Dolly Parton as a singer and a songwriter.   I’m not so sure that he was on such solid ground when discussing her breast re-construction, as simply returning her body to her younger, chubbier self.   That this was the “real” Dolly Parton, rather than a re-invention.   I also concur with one of the blog responses to this program — that it is narrow to laud Dolly Parton as a role model to women and girls — forgetting that she is also a role model to men and boys.
