U of T theatre students re-enact Doris Anderson’s Rebel Daughter

Doris Rebel Daughter 2002 bio

Theatre students  (13 men and 6 women all in their 20s) in the program at University of Toronto, Sheridan College Based their final-year production on the autobiography of journalist and feminist Doris Anderson, Rebel Daughter.   They entitle their play Sons and Daughters.

What struck me as a very good teaching-learning experience related to the continuing divisive abortion issue that Doris Anderson took on as editor of Chatelaine magazine in the 60s.  Students were invited to play the part that was opposite to their personally held belief — pro-life or pro-choice.  The actors who Michael Enright interviewed on the Sunday Edition made much of the fact that Doris was ahead of her time, and reproductive issues and women’s bodies continue to raise strong emotions and heated debates.
