Merriam al-Ijliyah al-Astrulabi: Muslim Mother of Invention

Merriam al-Ijliyah al-Astrulabi hand-crafted astrolabes for the ruler of Aleppo in northern Syria, so necessary for navigation and to keep track of prayer times.

She makes an appearance in the short film starring Ben Kingsley on the contributions of Muslims to modern civilization. Who would the Greeks and Romans present in their 1001 inventions?

Arlene McKanic also features Merriam in her blog, which also serves as a counternarrative to anti-Muslim sentiment in the face of wars and unrest in Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan — and of course 911.
