The IRIS Group was formed in 1996 as a forum whose aim is to raise levels of access for women in the arts, to share ideas and offer mutual support. Artists are based in Durham Region, Ontario and meet regularly to develop projects that further the overall intentions of the group.  The Media Release for their October, 2009 exhibition at Agnes Jamieson Gallery in Minden, Ontario, is included in this post, along with two images of the IRIS Group contribution to the Fluid II installation.

Stay tuned to this site for a review of the annual book, beginning on International Women’s Day 2005 and featuring special events of  the IRIS Group to celebrate the thoughts, ideas and images of women in many communities.

The IRIS Group presents

 Women In . . .

A Community art project

Saturday, 24 October, 2009
2 – 4 p.m.

In conjunction with their exhibition FLUID II at Agnes Jamieson Gallery, members of IRIS are inviting women to participate in an installation project that involves writing, mixed media and photography.  The activities from the day’s event will become part of this ongoing cumulative exhibition.   While the focus is on women, everyone is welcome to attend.

At the event IRIS is COLLECTING:

  • An object of any kind, invested with personal or symbolic meaning.  The objects contribute towards an installation, which becomes part of the larger display.
  • photographic documentation of women who participate
  • hand and/or footprints of women
  • Writings by women in response to  a series of questions.

1.  In your lifetime what, if any positive changes have you seen for yourself or women in general?

2.  Does Women’s International Day have a special meaning for you?

3.  Can you tell a story about a woman who has made an impact on your life?

A Writing Project:  Me at 8 years, 20 years and so on.

At every event, those who attend become part of Women In … through their participation in activities and their donated things.

Beginning on International Women’s Day 2005, the IRIS Group has carried out special events to celebrate the thoughts, ideas and images of women in many communities.

A book chronicling the contributions from previous events is available for purchase, with new entries added in ensuing volumes.
